A mother of two, Angela Rozas, currently residing in Victoria, Australia, has decided to fly to Mexico to undergo Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant, an experimental treatment which has the potential to reboot the immune system and can help in halting the progression of the MS disease.
The Stem cell treatment was very recently designated by the physicians a major breakthrough in the MS treatment paradigm. A recent trial conducted on Multiple Sclerosis patients had found that the Stem Cell Transplant treatment could be a “Game Changer” for Multiple Sclerosis patients and can reduce the disability in MS patients to a great extent and can help in halting the progression of the disease. The treatment involves wiping out the MS Patient’s immune system by the use of Cancer drugs and then reinstating the system with a Stem Cell Transplant.
The trial was conducted in over 100 patients, all of whom were suffering from Relapsing form of Multiple Sclerosis. Some of the patients in the trial were treated with Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and the others were treated with conventional MS drugs. After an year of treatment, just 1 relapse was observed among the 52 patients who were given Stem cell treatment and after an average follow up of 3 years, only 6 percent of the patients failed on the stem cell treatment. On the other hand, 39 out of the 50 patients who were given conventional drug treatments experienced relapse within a year and the treatment failed for 60 per cent patients in the average follow up period of 3 years.
Angela Rozas, currently 35 years of age, was diagnosed with MS around a year back and has experienced fast progression of the disease with rapid deterioration in her speech and balance. Angela says, “My two beautiful children, Johnathan and Isabella, are ten and seven years old and as terrifying as the progression of this disease has been for me, it frightens me more that before too long this disease could rob me of the ability to be the active mother I want to be.”
The treatment is not available in Australia and hence Angela and her husband would have to fly down to Mexico to get the treatment. The treatment would cost the couple around $70,000 and for this the family has set up a page with the name GoFundMe page to raise the money.
